Going through Ngozi Okonjo Iweala’s book titled “Fighting Corruption is Dangerous. The stories behind the headlines”, she noted in the first chapter titled “The Intimidation Game” that her father has always admonished them “ keep your nose clean, hold your head high, and never allow anyone to intimidate or blackmail you”.

Revealing further in the book that her mother was in the kidnappers den as a result of some policy initiatives that she embarked on as the Minister for Finance that was not favourable to some oil oligarchs who held the nation aground as this was confirmed by the initial demand of the kidnappers that she should announce on national television and radio that she was resigning her job as Finance Minister and leaving the country to go back to the United States. This is not an empty threat in Nigeria because a one time sitting Attorney General was assassinated and lately a retired Army General got the same fate and the perpetrators are at large .

Some variables might be favourable some might not be. The question for today is, how will you respond when you are trying your best and at the same time equally intimated and blackmailed?

When Ngozi’s mother was kidnapped she did not peter out but followed the events with equanimity.
