SENATOR DINO MELAYE: FROM ROYAL HIGHNESS TO RUGGED HIGHNESS

SENATOR DINO MELAYE: FROM ROYAL HIGHNESS TO RUGGED HIGHNESS.
C (2018)                         CHIBU NDUBUISI            7/05/2018              WEEK 19

If you speak the truth, you die. If you lie, you die. I, Dino Melaye has decided to speak the truth and die,” “Democracy will continue to be the government of the people by the people for the people but what we have today is greedocracy which is the government of the greedy by the greedy and for the greedy. Dino Melaye

 Peace be upon you.

Senator Dino has a very impressive profile. Former student Union leader, at ABU Zaria, led the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), former Secretary-General, of the African Youth Council and that of the Commonwealth Youth Council, appointed by former President Olusegun Obasanjo to chair the Presidential Advisory Youth Council, a former Member of the Federal House of Representative, a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and an author. You can’t take it away from him that he has not paid his dues that qualified him into the royal class of Nigeria’s political elites.

Just as these accolades seem impressive, a catalog of controversies equally trails him. His second name is Mr. Controversy. He once threatened to beat up Senator Oluremi Tinubu and impregnate her on the floor of the Senate. Dino,”it is not bravery when a man fights a woman. He was accused of certificate forgery but was proved innocent. A process to recall him from the Senate started in June 2017 and failed in April 2018. He has criticized the government of President Mohammadu Buhari bitterly. He is currently unmarried, though has four kids from two women. He took a swipe at Adams Oshiolmole former Governor of Edo state for “importing his wife” who is from Cape Verde rather than marrying a Nigerian, (promoting made in Nigeria women). Yet, he is unable to live with the Nigerian women he married. He fought former President Jonathan and led many protests against him, fought former Speaker Dimeji Bankole and now fighting Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi state. Accused by the police of gun running and the prime suspects escapes from police custody a day to his appearance in court. Dino was arrested by the police on his way to Morocco and was about to be conveyed to Lokoja for trial and he jumps down from the police van and sat on the road like a “papalolo”. An African proverb says that “a man who makes trouble for others is also making it for himself”.
 He was taken to Zankli hospital by his aids. SARs rushed to Zankli Medical Centre, Mabushi, , and took him to Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the trauma section at the National Hospital. The Senate house suspended plenary session in solidarity for their colleague who is vilified and persecuted.
Ben Murray-Bruce will later add through his twitter handle “Very sad to hear what transpired. Dino is asthmatic, yet while in transit, the police gassed him and he could barely breathe. The second time they gassed him, he had to force his way out of the vehicle. Dino literally escaped death. SAD!”.

 Dino was very smart not to allow the experience of Chuba Okadigbo, who was equally tear gassed while at a rally in Kano state. This experience will help him understand what ordinary Nigerian face in the hand of Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) and the cry for the “End SARS Campaigns” over the land.
He was arraigned on charges bordering on his alleged escape from a police vehicle and attempted suicide in Abuja on April 24th, 2018 and granted bail to the sum 90 million naira on the 2nd May 2018. He was rearrested by SARS subsequently and to be in police custody till the 11th of June 2018 for an appearance in courts. When trouble comes, it comes in droves.
In one of the interviews, Senator Dino granted, he was asked about what motivated him into politics and what is the future of youths in attaining the political leadership of this country? He answered;

“My drive in politics is to make life more bearable for Nigerians. My interest in politics is for developmental reasons. I am in politics to right the wrongs of the society. I am in politics to offer palliatives to Nigerians. I am in politics to make sure that the youths of this country get their fair share in power-sharing and resources of this country.-------Power is never served as a buffet.  To attain power, you must struggle for it. The youths of this country will not get power on a platter of gold. So they must come out of their cocoons and begin to make sacrifices in search for power. The youths of this country must be resolute. They should be interested in how they are being governed and they must be interested in policy formulation and implementation. They must be interested in their political and economic environment. That is the only way they can capture power because power is not given; power is taken. The youths of this country must show capacity and interest in every facet of our national life and they must also make sure that they react to the environment.”

Senator Dino, what I will say at this juncture is that “a man’s life from birth to death is a series of transition rites which brought him nearer and nearer to his ancestors”. Nigeria will definitely get better with your contributions.

You will not be forgotten as you ruggedly pursue the truth you stand for as you rightly said in the aforementioned quote which I will repeat again “I, Dino Melaye has decided to speak the truth and die,” you will not be the first who died for a cause.  The police are suing you now for wanting to die. Why will you want to die, Dino? You were elected to serve and not to die. Please, no room for dying because we are all in this mess together which you helped packaged. No wonder Bola Ige averred that “If you know how to package shit, you can sell it in Nigeria”.
Carry your cross with equanimity. Uneasy lays the head that wears the crown, not the crown of roses alone but equally the crown of thorns.
Peace be with you.
