Peace be upon you.

An online dictionary defines selective ignorance as the practice of selectively ignoring distracting, irrelevant, or otherwise unnecessary information received.

Selective ignorance is about ignoring some philosophies, life styles and accepting your ignorance of not paying attention to them. We normally hear about the cliché “No knowledge is a waste”. I want to gladly inform you that in this age of “narrow casting" rather than broadcasting so many information we process are indeed useless and not worth our attention.

Why do we tend to look for information that confirms our biases, while ignoring those that shows us light? Why will a health worker trying to administer vaccine against polio be murdered in cold blood? Why would Leah Shaibu the Christian girl who was abducted by Boko Harem be refused release because of her faith? Of what use is the knowledge of becoming a suicide bomber, serial murderer? With all our advancement in technology, why is there an increase in animosity, envy, hatred and warfare? Why do we have obese doctors even if they teach healthy living? Why do we have divorcees as marriage counselors? Some will tell us to get the message and forget about the messengers. i understand.

Scott Slayton list some advantages of selective ignorance he notes that:

·                             Selective Ignorance Saves You From Needless Anger

·         Selective Ignorance Saves You from Needless Anxiety

·         Selective Ignorance Saves You from Needless Distraction

Any knowledge that is not about value addition to humanity is worth ignoring. Any knowledge that that does not move you towards self-discovery of Who am I?, is worth ignoring.

Someone opined that the most important element of any education is not learning facts or skills but learning what to love to help heal a fractured world.

We must equally note that no matter the level of your knowledge, there is no life without error and shortcoming. But selective ignorance is important if we must grow.

Peace be with you.
