Peace be upon you.

“Life will break you. Nobody can protect you from that, and living alone won't either, for solitude will also break you with its yearning. ―Louise Erdrich. The Painted Drum.

The music group, West life hit track “Fool Again” has the chorus that goes thus
Can't believe that I'm a fool again
I thought this love would never end,
How was I to know?
You never told me
Can't believe that I'm a fool again,
And I who thought you were my friend,
How was I to know?
You never told me.

We have so many colourations of heart breaks. We have seen political heart breaks in Nigeria, economic voodoo policies that have caused so much heart break for Nigerians and great collapse of social solidarity amongst her citizens. But my take on this is that sometimes, we create our own heart breaks through unfounded expectations, like believing in a Superman Messianic Complex that has all the solution to all our problems.

Sometimes from these heart breaks we are changed profoundly to make better decisions tomorrow. The league of Nation was founded after the First World War; the United Nations was founded from the ashes of 2nd World War with a pledge never to allow such carnage to occur again. Japan adopted a pacifist policy after the 2nd war. Slavery and colonialism led to the formation of Organization of African Unity (OAU) now African Union (AU) working to build a peaceful, prosperous and integrated Africa. But sadly the slavery experience of Africans in Libya is a terrible and sad reminder that we have learnt nothing.

A philosopher defined “insanity as doing the same thing over and over expecting different result”. When will we learn? We will continue to be fools over and over again as the music group sang if we don’t rise from our tragedies to inspire something new. Oscar Wilde averred that “the heart was made to be broken.” If the political class has broken your hearts enough, get ready with your voters card and do the needful. If your boyfriend, girlfriend, has not broken your heart enough still give them space to keep breaking it, till it opens well.

Philosopher Rumi has one advice for those who are not ready to learn from the pains of the past, that “we have to keep breaking our hearts until it opens”. Our hearts must open to deal with this “HERDSMEN MENACE” in Nigeria.

I will wish all those who are not yet ready to learn “Happy Heart Breaking Season”. Keep breaking your hearts till it opens. A bible verse psalms 147;3 says “he heals the broken hearted and binds their wounds”. Your healing will surely come.
Peace be with you.
