Peace be upon you.

We often hear about the expression “Shallow thinking” to show of a person or his ideas not grounded or showing serious understanding of a situation. How do we develop thinking patterns that are shallow? What parameters can we use to evaluate when shallow thinking is holding sway over deep understanding of a phenomenon? How can we possibly remedy ourselves when confronted with half-baked ideas?

How do we develop thinking patterns that are shallow? We lay the foundation as a nation when “quota system” holds sway over “merit system”. No wonder, over the years we have produced glorified suckers as policy makers. A nation that thinks of fasting and prayer over building of industries is another sure path to bondage. A nation that refuses to pay the premium of educating her citizen about how to face the future will pay the dividend of high output of ignoramuses as we are witnessing today in Nigeria. Even those who know and know that they know are persecuted and hounded by an unjust system.

Dwelling on the second question, how do we determine when shallow thinking is holding sway? A recent episode in Nigerian politics was when an Attorney General of a federation granted audience to a fugitive and assisted the fugitive get soft landing by ensuring that the fugitive is giving the necessary government backing. Forgetting the twin pillars of natural justice, namely:- audi alteram partem which literally mean “hear the other side”, and nemo judex in causasua which means “no one should be a judge in his own cause”.

We equally hear about the confessions of armed robbers, who after dispossessing their victims of their valuables proceed to the church to give tithes to God for more blessings to keep protecting and providing for them in their exploits.

Dealing with the third question, how can we remedy the situation? Many years ago, I learnt a quote that “any nation that tolerates shoddiness in philosophy because it is an exalted profession and undermines plumbing because it is humble profession, neither its theories nor pipes will hold water”.
To make our theories, policies and practices to hold water, we must dive deep in our various callings and unearth better framework that works and tilts towards making the world a better place.

Peace be with you.
