“He who is seeking revenge must dig two graves” Chinese proverbs
Peace be upon you.
The “Veil of Ignorance” principle of John Rawl poses a question: that “What kind of society would you construct if you did not know in advance who you would be; black or white, rich or poor, upper or lower class, freeborn or slaves?” I know instinctively that many reading this piece will choose to construct a society where justice will prevail; equality will be the norm and helping the vulnerable a tradition and deconstruct a society of hate, cruelty and vengeance with light.
The progress witnessed in the 18th, 19th, 20th and 21st centuries was occasioned by efforts made to negotiate and reduce senseless wars. The world has witnessed a quantum leap in human progress and development.
A problem not understood cannot be solved. Why do people seek revenge? To maintain pride, show patriotism, defend the family, economic/ political interest and show their level of patriotism. After the atomic bomb experience in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the country did not seek revenge but pledged never to permit, produce or deal in enterprises capable of causing existential threats to us all. Japan choose peace and found life and vitality after that 2nd world war experience. Many nations that have never experienced such atrocities are not as advanced as Japan. Seeking on revenge makes you blinder from the real issues that need to be addressed. The issue that needs to be addressed is about how collectively we can heal a fractured world.
At some point in global history, the United States of America (USA) were going about subverting and undermining the governments of other countries instead of promoting good governance. It never envisaged that terror will later befall it on the scale it did in the last two decades which made them start yelling for a populist government like the Presidency of Donald Trump who they assume may have some of the answers created by the political elites.
It was Maimonides who advised that there is always an increase in envy, hatred and warfare when people are dispossessed. The USA will later be crying foul about Russia’s interference in their elections and are doing everything possible to continue and revitalize the Cold War atmosphere. “History is bound to repeat itself because men never learn from history”.
It was John C Maxwell who noted that when it comes to dealing with others there are only three rules we can take
· The Low Road--------- where we treat others worse than they treat us.
· The Middle Road- --- -where we treat others the same as they treat us.
· The High Road- -------where we treat others better than they treat us.
The road least travelled among these routes is the High Road, Which entreats us to do more to make the light shine on the affairs of men.
In his book “The Seat of the Soul” Gary Zukav poses a question that:
What is the appropriate response to evil? “The remedy for an absence is a presence. Evil is an absence and therefore it cannot be healed with an absence. Hatred of evil does not diminish evil, it increases it. Hatred of evil affects the one who hates. It makes him or her hateful person.
He who seeks for vengeance makes peace impossible.
Peace be with you.
