             Umaru…Umaru…Are You Dead?

In the heat of the 2007 elections campaign Yar Adua was rushed to Germany for medical treatment, which led to the infamous international call by Chief Obasanjo, ‘Umaru are u alive’?

Yar’Adua was eventually declared the winner of the presidential election held on April 21, 2007, and was sworn in on May 29, 2007. He articulated his Seven Point Agenda(power and energy,Niger Delta,Land reform,National Security, wealth Creation& Employment, transportation and food security and agriculture). He publicly admitted that 2007 elections which brought him to power was flawed. He launched Amnesty programme for Niger Delta Militants. Several Federal Executive Council (FEC) meetings were cancelled as a result of his ill health. We were latter told that he had been afflicted with a kidney disease and later pericarditis.

On 23 November, 2009 Yarr Adua left the country for Saudi Arabia for lesser Hajj and remained in the hospital till February 24, 2010 about 93 days. Michael Aondoaka, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice of the period argued that the president could exercise power from anywhere in the world because he failed to transmit a letter to the National Assembly (Parliament) as required by section 145 of the constitution.

On January 11, 2010 Yar’Adua spoke by telephone on BBC that his health is improving. It was on this interview that the National Assembly would latter invoke the “Doctrine of Necessity” to make Jonathan the Acting president.

On February 3, 2010, Professor Dora Akunyuli a member of the Federal Executive Council wrote a memo asking that a resolution be passed by its members to make Jonathan the Acting president. On 24, February president Yar Adua  was smuggled in to the country in a desperate move to hang on to power.

Obasanjo who had earlier campaigned for an ill man on his party’s platform would latter publicly disown Yar Adua because the Yar Adua Government reversed some of the hasty privatization Programme of Obasanjo’s government and halted the sale of key National Assets to his cronies. For this assertiveness on the part of Yar Adua, Obasanjo became very bitter with him.

On 5th May, 2010 Yarr Adua died and Jonathan was sworn as the president. He was the fifth Nigerian president to die while on power.

Was he cursed or was he the cause? was he a victim or villain?

Peace be with  you.
