Peace be to you
Jonathan sacks writes that 'it is not what we own that gives us share in eternity, but those to whom we give birth and the effort we make to ensure that they carry our belief and way of life in to the next generation'.
Over the years, family composition have been evolving. Today's family can be classified as ' married nuclear, single parents, joint custody, step families, grand parents led families, cohabitation families, foster families and group home. What type of orientation are children given in these homes? What mandate have they been trained to accomplish on earth? It is such mandate that made former president of American John Kennedy to dream about taking peope to the moon and admonished his people that they should think of what they can do for their countries and not what their countries should do for them. Such optimism is not feasible in Nigeria were children are now bread winners of families as a result of abdication of responsibility by parents and governments.
For our failure to take people first, we have lost. Oliver Sacks writes that 'if a man has lost a leg or an eye, he knows he has lost a leg and an eye but if he loses a self, himself, he cannot know it, because he is no longer there to know it'. Small actions over time has a larger consequence. It is called the "butterfly effect". As a result of small actions of ineptitude over time, we are now witnessing the end of tomorrow in Nigeria.
Jonathan sacks advises that 'to secure a nation you need an army but to secure a civilization you need education'. Does Nigeria even have a civilization to secure? How can we secure our civilization if we have one? Take People first, property second and we start securing a civilization. We just read in the media over how a former boss of Nigeria Custom Service and former governor of Benue state are so car crazy that they are not even proud of their possessions but if they had invested in people, they would have stood taller. They should be advised that no one wins in the rat race.
A verse in the bible says ' I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Chose life so that you and your descendants may live (Deuteronomy 30:19) . Nigerians please chose life.
Peace be with you
