SAME MESSAGE: DIFFERENT MELODY
CHIBU NDUBUISI 28/08/2017
Peace be to you.
Shakespeare wrote that “if music be the food of love play on, give me excess of it”. Every age has its own melody but the message remains the same. It can be messages of peace, harmony, love, economy, government, politics, unity, gratitude, etc. These messages keep resonating in every age with different melodies.
Ras kimono released his “Under Pressure” track in July 4, 1989, how, will we have explained the pressure that led a medical doctor to dive in to the Atlantic Ocean(Third mainland bridge Lagos) on March 19th 2017. What has changed with Eedris Abdulkarim “Nigeria jaga jaga” song? In the track he sang
Nigeria jagajaga,
Everything scatter scatter
Poor man dey suffer suffer
Gbosa, gbosa, gunshot inna de air.
What has changed? How many people can feed properly now? How many Nigerian workers are paid their salaries? Have criminal marauders, kidnappers, Boko Haram silenced their guns? Same message: different melody.
Today, parents complain about the vulgar lyrics of musicians, Baba Fela was the master of vulgar lyrics. He used his vulgar lyrics to tackle vulgar politicians of his age that brought vulgar policies that almost strangulated us all. The vulgar drama and policies has not changed even in this age. Same message: different melody.
Tuface, P Square, Flavour, Phyno have all given us great love songs like the track of Felix Liberty “ifeoma”. Same message: different melody.
Some musicians have integrated the “Old school and New school” together giving us good remix like P Square and Onyeka Onwenu” iyokoko”. I thank them. This is the type of collaboration we need in politics between new breed and old school. I thank the group #nottooyoungtorun for their advocacy.
We all remember Fela kuti’s track “Sorrows Tears and Blood”
"Them regular trademark
them leave sorrow, tears and blood
them regular trademark"
Has the story changed? Is it different from African China’s “Mr President” song, which is most vital today for us all. He sang
“Food e no dey
Brother eh water no dey”
And our road e no good o
What about the NEPA people o
we no get light"
Same message: different melody.
The new age musician have conquered more grounds than their fathers, made more pay than their fathers and will use this Information, Communication and Technological age to keep breaking boundaries. Fathers, please keep blessing them rather than cursing them or planning how to gauge them through social media. Fathers, for your information, this is the age of “everybody organizing without organization”. Age of “Narrow casting rather broadcasting”, so you can do nothing about it. It is an age against oppression in whatever hue.
Baba Fryo sang “Dem go dey pose, dem go de denge denge”, nothing explains this better than the pictures of top government functionaries posing with the president while he was on medical vacation in London.
After reading this, add your own melody from old and new school and let’s keep the music as our food of love flowing.
One love. ` #samemessagedifferentmelody
Peace be with you
