FROM CITIZENS TO NETIZENS; OUR SELFIE GENERATION(Part 1)

Peace be to you.
A citizen is a person who has the legal rights to belong to a particular country. Netizen is a term derived from the combination of the words "Internet" and "citizen." The term netizen is used to describe people who use the Internet to participate in or contribute to an Internet group or society. The word may also be used to describe an individual who spends a lot of time on the net.
Special thanks goes to Sir Tim Berners Lee for his invention of the “World Wide Web” and the important decision to give it away for free. The United Nation Human Right Council (UNHCR) adopted a landmark resolution protecting online freedom of expression as a human right. it is no longer a child's play.
A selfie is a photo you take of yourself especially by using a digital camera or smart phone held in the hand or supported by a selfie stick.
Tim Jordan explains that cyber power has three intertwined levels namely the individual, social place and techno power. When cyber space is understood as the playground of the individual then cyber power appears as a possession an individual can use. Secondly, when cyber space is understood as being a social place where communities exist, then cyber power appears as a techno power in which greater freedom of action is offered. Thirdly, when the internet and cyberspace are understood as being a society or even a digital nation, then cyber power appears as an imagination through which individuals recognize in each other a common commitment to virtual life.
The digital age has come with many innovations that have simplified life, but regrettably we have forgotten that “technology was made to serve man and not man to serve technology”. The issue of internet addiction disorder is a case in point of how man has been held hostage by technology. “The Fear of Missing Out” syndrome (FOMO), “The Fear of Losing a Special Moment” syndrome (FSLM), and the “Selfie Syndrome” all aggregate and become a burden that men bear. No wonder Rousseau advised that “man was born free but everywhere in chains”.
The selfie syndrome means an obsession with taking selfie without restrain and responsibility. In their hit track titled “Nobody Ugly” verse 2, the P Square brothers sang that
you go for window shopping take a selfie chakam(on window shopping you take a selfie)
you post am up dey tag your maga gbagam(you tag your friend)
you dey there dey form ikoyi when you dey ipaja( and lie that you are where you are not))
chai, na who you they decieve o eh eheh( who are you deceiving)
You see G Wagon Chakham( you see G Wagon vehicle you take a selfie)
you they big mansion Chakam(on a good structural edifice you take a selfie)
even you dey for toilet Chakam ( even in the toilet, you take a selfie)
Snapchating video chakam (snapchating you take a selfie)
Olo lo lo o o o
Eh, na watin be this o
Na disease oh ( this is disease indeed).
The most surprising truth might be that the selfie addiction works as a depressant to an empty life that needs public admiration to fill that void of hollowness, hence, that public show to keep up with the Joneses. Some of those selfie addicts may pose as kings/Queens, Prince/Princess but with a heart of slavery that has been commodified for perpetual servitude. "life’s big question is; are you really that attractive or is your selfie game just too strong for moderation? you are not advised against taking selfies, the problem is when the selfie craze turns you to become narcissistic.
Jonathan Sacks sees “the selfie as our newest religious ritual because worship of the self conflicts directly with our social nature, and advised that when we have too much of the “I” and not of the “WE” we find ourselves vulnerable, fearful and alone”.
The era Netizenship can offer a platform of shared standards that can heal a fractured selfie addict. We should help them by letting them know that they can still dream dreams and not be held hostage online .
Peace be with you
